There is an old axiom that the 3 keys to successfully selecting real estate are "location, location and location". The 3 keys that guide the successful selection and development of commercial properties are Visibility, Accessibility and Parking.
An effective on-premise sign is critical component of visibility, and the sign should receive the same careful attention as these other components. Without a properly designed and placed on-premise business sign, a commercial site cannot function at its full economic potential.

An animation representing one possible lighting sequence of the Westinghouse Sign
The Westinghouse Sign was a large, animated, electric sign advertising the Westinghouse Electric company and located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, U.S.A. The sign was best known for the huge number of combinations in which its individual elements could be illuminated. The sign was removed in 1998 when the building on which it was mounted was demolished to make way for the construction of PNC Park.
The various corporations which have carried the Westinghouse name have erected countless signs and other promotional devices during the past 140 years, including many in the corporate hometown of Pittsburgh. A cubic Westinghouse sign stood in downtown Pittsburgh for approximately thirty five years and was so familiar that it was allowed to remain in place until 2002, even after the building it marked (the Westinghouse Tower) was no longer owned or occupied by Westinghouse.

Construction and operation
The Westinghouse Sign was mounted atop the WESCO building in Pittsburgh's North Shore neighborhood. WESCO began as the Westinghouse Electrical Supply Company, an offshoot of the original Westinghouse Electric founded by George Westinghouse in 1886. The sign consisted of nine repetitions of the familiar "Circle-W" logo created by graphic designer Paul Rand, each one eighteen feet in diameter. Each Circle-W was divided into ten sections—the top and bottom of the enclosing circle, the four diagonal strokes of the W, the three dots above the W, and the bar below—meaning that the entire sign comprised ninety individual elements. It is described as having been lit by neon tubes, but as the sign was blue it is likely that argon tubes were actually used.
The WESCO building stood near Three Rivers Stadium on the banks of the Allegheny River just opposite Downtown Pittsburgh, and the sign was one of several large illuminated corporate billboards that became a fixture of Pittsburgh's evening skyline. (The Alcoa sign atop Mount Washington was another.)
What distinguished the Westinghouse sign was the common perception that there was a practically infinite number of sequences in which the sign's elements could be lit, and that no sequence was ever repeated. The Westinghouse corporation encouraged this perception. In reality, only a very small number of lighting combinations—perhaps fewer than thirty—were actually displayed. This was because the sign was controlled by Westinghouse's own Numalogic Programmable Logic Controllers, which were well-suited to controlling repetitive tasks but were not designed to generate an ever-changing sequence of new instructions.

The sign was demolished when the WESCO building was razed in the autumn of 1998 to make way for PNC Park, which succeeded Three Rivers as the home of the Pittsburgh Pirates. Preservationists intended to save at least one of the Circle-W units for eventual display at the Senator John Heinz History Center. However, both the physical structure and electrical components were in such a state of decay that this was not possible, and the sign literally fell apart as it was dismantled. While newspaper accounts of the time report that at least one Circle-W was saved, individuals involved in the project report that nothing was salvagable.

Other signs
Smaller versions of the sign were erected in Atlanta, Georgia; Cleveland, Ohio, and New York City. The latter was located along Queens Boulevard on the approach to LaGuardia Airport. These each included three repetitions of the Circle-W insignia.

is a privately owned manufacturer of electric signs based in Salt Lake City. The company was founded by Thomas Young in 1920 and today has divisions and branches in 10 western states, as well as in Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas. YESCO offers a comprehensive range of services for electronic signs, including design, fabrication, installation and ongoing maintenance.
Many notable sign projects have been produced by YESCO. These include the NBC Experience globe in New York City, the historic El Capitan Theatre and Wax Museum marquees in Hollywood, and numerous icons in Las Vegas, such as Vegas Vic, the Fremont Street Experience, the Astrolabe in The Venetian and the recent Wynn Las Vegas resort sign.
The NBC Experience Store Globe
NBC ushered in the millennium with a new YESCO “message globe” in its NBC Experience store, located at Rockefeller Center in New York City. The electronic sign quickly became recognized as one of the most distinctive electronic displays in the world.
From the outside of the building, it looks like a brilliant illuminated globe. The 35’-diameter hemisphere is covered with thousands of full-color LEDs. Colorful video and special effects, along with animations provided by YESCO’s media services group, are displayed on the globe’s surface, telling the NBC story. When it was first turned on, it literally stopped traffic on West 49th Street.[citation needed]

Vegas Vic

Perhaps the world’s most recognized electronic sign, Vegas Vic was designed by and built by YESCO. Upon its installation in 1951 over the Pioneer Club on historical Fremont Street, the 40'-tall electronic cowboy immediately became Las Vegas’s unofficial greeter.

Wynn Las Vegas
The 135-foot (41 m) tall marquee features a 100-foot (30 m) high, 50-foot (15 m) wide, concave, double-faced LED message center with a first-of-its-kind “moving eraser.” Conceived by Steve Wynn, the massive eraser glides silently and smoothly up and down over the LED message center, appearing to change the graphics as it goes. The eraser weighs 62,000 pounds, and is counterbalanced by a 62,000-pound weight inside the sign.[4]
The sign uses 4,377,600 LEDs and the eraser is powered by a 300 horsepower (220 kW) motor at its base that runs a gear and cable system. The firm of FTSI engineered the 62,000-pound eraser’s movement, which is capable of speeds up to 10 feet per second (3.0 m/s).[5]

YESCO's "Bone Yards"
YESCO "boneyard"
More formally known as the Young Electric Sign Company's Neon Sign Graveyard,[6] or also as the Neon Boneyard, YESCO maintains a storage yard of retired signs in Las Vegas in a fenced lot behind its facility that is not open to the public. The lot is located at 899 Encanto Dr. Las Vegas, Nevada 89101. Many signs can be seen with online map viewing websites. The company has been instrumental in supporting the Neon Museum, which is dedicated to preserving the neon signs and associated artifacts of Las Vegas[7]. The Neon Museum has now moved many of the signs from YESCO's lot to a new storage facility at the future home of the Neon Museum in Downtown Las Vegas, where they are awaiting restoration.
Some of the retired signs in the boneyard include the sign for the Silver Slipper casino and Aladdin's lamp from the first version of Aladdin Casino. In 2004 the Binions Horseshoe sign was relocated to the boneyard when Harrah's bought the casino. They then sold the casino to MTR Gaming Group that rebranded the casino as Binion's Gambling Hall and Hotel .

The Fremont Street Experience

Resorts & Casinos
In 1932 YESCO expanded into the resort and casino industry – just a year after gaming was legalized in Las Vegas – and has played an important role in the resort and casino industry ever since, not only in Las Vegas but throughout regions of the United States and Canada where gaming is found. The company maintains separate manufacturing facilities for interior signs, exterior signs and digital electronics.
